It’s February. How are your new year plans progressing?
Have you given up? Thinking of giving up? Struggling?
Or, are you on a high, with the dopamine boost from goals achieved and new habits progressing nicely? If so, sincere congratulations.
The 5-step Re-launch
If you’ve given up, lost enthusiasm for your new goals and targets or are finding it hard to keep momentum going, here is my re-launch process. Just 5 easy steps to a New Start!
Step 1. Turn the page.
Yes, first forget the past and start from NOW. Using whatever metaphor you like, choose to:
- Turn to a new page
- Think “I’m starting NOW”
- Today is a new day
Some people advise “learn from your mistakes then start again”. But learning from your mistakes can spiral you into a bad place of self-criticism. When you stew over all the things that went wrong, you can easily end up feeling bad, wrong and dispirited.
I know because I’ve done that too. So forget the bad start and begin again!
Step 2. Create one really clear goal
- Give it a time, a deadline and make it very specific. With numbers. Take the example of getting fit: get fit by X date.
- Decide how you’ll measure success. Clothes size? Kilos you can lift? Activities you can do easily?
Step 3. List specific activities which will enable you to meet your goal:
- Daily exercise
- Gym visits
- Jogging
- Playing with the kids
- Using stairs instead of lift/elevator etc
Step 4. Rate your level on each of these activities.
Do a rating of your level now from 0-10 (0= avoid physical activity, 10-excellent). This way you can re-rate yourself every few weeks and notice the progress.
Step 5. Get support from other people
- Involve your family
- If you’ve got young children, get them to draw you a motivating picture
- Ask everyone to praise you when you go jogging
- Request them to encourage you to keep going when you lose momentum, not persuade you to miss a day
- Pay a personal trainer
- Tell your friends, those who are likely to be supportive
- Get a buddy to do it with you
And if fitness isn’t your goal just use the same system on what YOU want to achieve. It’s a tried and tested process and is quick to set up.
Here’s to your successful achievements in 2020!
