Make Space for Serenity and Calm

April 30, 2020 By Alison Haill

We’re rising to the challenge. We’re showing leadership and fortitude in this time of uncertainty and crisis.

You too, I’m sure.

The inner self

Are you making time to nourish your health and immune system too?

Are you taking steps to nourish and support your emotional energy, your inner self, your soul?

To continue to function effectively, we need to look after ourselves too – the emotional as much as the physical, the psychological as well as the logical.

calm serenity

Science tells us that stress impairs our immune system.

Luckily, we also know that stress can be reduced – by relaxation, mindfulness, meditation, even exercise.

Positive inspiring relaxing

I’d like to share two things that have worked for me. They give me something different from my logical rational brain-work. A space for calm – enabling me to replenish. One uses words, the other music.

Why not try one – or both – to feed your inner self, or change your mood?

The words

“And people stayed home
and read books and listened
and rested and exercised
and made art and played
and learned new ways of being
and stopped
and listened deeper
someone meditated
someone prayed
someone danced
someone met their shadow
and people began to think differently
and people healed
and in the absence of people who lived in ignorant ways,
dangerous, meaningless and heartless,
even the earth began to heal
and when the danger ended
and people found each other
grieved for the dead people
and they made new choices
and dreamed of new visions
and created new ways of life
and healed the earth completely
just as they were healed themselves…”

And People Stayed Home, prose poem by Kathleen O’ Meara, March 2020.

The music

My sister and I grew up in a world of classical music because our mother was a professional pianist. She loved this piece so we often heard her practising it before a concert.

Click to listen to it here, Franz Schubert’s Impromptu number 4.

As an adult, the more I hear it, the more I appreciate its beauty and changes of mood.

Listen and enjoy it here.
